Retail Sales Associate / Gift Shop Assistant

Job Description:

‘Shoppies” are responsible for achieving and exceeding sales goals on their designated vessel. These positions operate in the various gift shops on board, as well as open promotional areas. Shop staff must apply various selling techniques in order to achieve and exceed targets, and so too increase their personal income. Successful applicants are dynamic and outgoing, with a natural flair for sales and a genuine interest in people.

Contract length: 6 – 8 months, with 6 – 8 weeks’ vacation time between contracts.

Starting salary: Approximately $1000.00 to $1300.00 per month, paid bi-weekly, depending on the concession/cruise line and commission earnings, cruise ship size and itinerary. Possible promotion to Assistant Gift Shop/Retail Sales Manager position upon completion of product courses, and past performance review consideration.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Applicants must be at least 21 years old.
  • Applicants must have at least 2 years’ recent sales experience with a proven track record.
  • Applicants with established retail outlet sales experience will be given preference. (E.g. Edgars, Woolworths, Boutiques etc.)
  • Applicants must have excellent communication & presentation skills. (Will be expected to do a promotional presentation during final interview)
  • Applicants must not have a criminal record – a police clearance check will be conducted!
  • Applicants must not have any visible tattoos (when in uniform). Acceptable if it can easily be concealed.
  • Applicants must be medically fit – see factors below that may DISQUALIFY you for employment:
    • Body Mass Index higher than 30 (Divide your weight in kilograms by your height in metres, then divide the answer by your height again to establish your current BMI)
    • Chronic medical conditions such as diabetes, asthma, heart disease, hepatitis, Back or joint problems, epilepsy, anxiety/depression & HIV
    • Any impairing disability (includes the use of hearing aids, for example)

Your Expenses:

Budget for approximately R 25000.00

Costs include coaching/service fees, Medicals (which are valid for two years), C1D VISA and your one-way flight ticket. The cost of the C1D VISA will be reimbursed once you board, along with any travel & accommodation expenses incurred between arrival and joining at port the next day – so keep your receipts! (You spend one night in a hotel prior to joining your vessel, this is pre-arranged by Starboard but not always pre-paid). You will receive a full breakdown of all the costs along with a detailed job brief with your initial interview invitation.

Recruitment Process:

  1. After receiving your application and it has been deemed suitable, we will invite you for an Initial Interview. (Invitations go out via email within 14 days’ of receiving your application)
  2. During your initial interview we will coach you for your final interview, make sure you are thoroughly informed about the position you have been selected for, and check that your documents are in order.
  3. Final interviews are conducted in person by a representative of Starboard. These bulk interviews, or “hiring trips”, usually occur twice per year in Cape Town & Pretoria based on Starboard’s recruitment needs. As such, you must be prepared to wait a while between initial and final interviews.  We will inform you well ahead of time as soon as the final interview date has been established.
  4. After successfully passing your final interview, you can generally expect to commence your career on board within 6 months, depending on how quickly you can complete your medicals and VISA to get onto the waiting list for scheduling. We will of course guide you every step of the way!
