Floor Technician (Entertainment)

Job Description:

The Floor Technician manages the stage area during all shows. She/he oversees safe entrance/exits of all cast, performers and crew, as well as scenery movement and automated backdrops. This position is the “eyes & ears” of the Automation and Lighting Technicians on the floor area, giving them clearance for any automation and pyrotechnics cues. The Floor Technician also coordinates 6 stage hands and the assigned fire patrol, ensuring all shows run safely and effectively on stage. She/he is also responsible for the cleaning & maintenance of scenery and props, as well as the safety and upkeep of all backstage areas. Reports to the Entertainment Technical Manager.

Contract length: 6 – 10 months, with 6 – 8 weeks’ vacation time between contracts.

Starting salary: Approximately $2400.00 per month that increases per contract if training is completed during the preceding contract.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Applicants must be at least 21 years old.
  • Applicants must have at least 2 years’ recent experience in a similar position.
  • Applicants must have basic carpentry, painting, sewing and electrical skills.
  • Applicants must have theatre background & experience, be familiar with industry terms, standard rules, regulations and common practices.
  • Applicants must not have a criminal record – a police clearance check will be conducted!
  • Applicants must not have any visible tattoos (when in uniform). Acceptable if it can easily be concealed.
  • Applicants must be medically fit – see factors below that may DISQUALIFY you for employment:
    • Body Mass Index higher than 30 (Divide your weight in kilograms by your height in metres, then divide the answer by your height again to establish your current BMI)
    • Chronic medical conditions such as diabetes, asthma, heart disease, hepatitis, Back or joint problems, epilepsy, anxiety/depression & HIV
    • Any impairing disability (includes the use of hearing aids, for example)

Note: As an additional mandatory requirement, all applicants are expected to successfully complete an online psychometric assessment before being considered for initial interview, and an English test (at a minimal charge) before being considered for final interview.

Your Expenses:

Budget for approximately R 25000.00

Costs include your English test fee, Medicals (which are valid for two years), C1D VISA and one-way flight ticket. The cost of the C1D VISA and any expenses incurred travelling from the airport-to-hotel-to-port will be reimbursed upon presentation of your receipts once you board. (You spend one night in a hotel prior to joining your vessel, booked and paid for by Carnival Cruise Lines).  You will receive a full breakdown of all the costs along with a detailed job brief with your initial interview invitation..

Recruitment Process:

  1. After receiving your application and it has been deemed suitable, we will invite you for an Initial Interview. (Invitations go out via email within 14 days of receiving your application)
  2. During your initial interview we will coach you for your final interview, make sure you are thoroughly informed about the position you have been selected for, and check that your documents are in order.
  3. Final interviews are conducted via Skype with a Carnival representative, usually within a few days after having met with us.
  4. After successfully passing your final interview, you can generally expect to commence your career on board within 2 to 6 months, depending on individual circumstance. (This allows you enough time to work in your notice period and do the medicals, VISA application etc.) We will of course guide you every step of the way!
